Roulette: History, what is, how to and strategy

History of Roulette

I believe every gambler in this world came across a casino game called roulette. It is designed for gamblers who enjoyed the thrill of fast game and big payout. Having said that, the risk is higher comparing to other casino games available today. Let’s learn a little bit about roulette …

Roulette, meaning little wheel in French, is a type of game where people place their bets on a or many numbers and the dealer roll a ball and see where it land to decide on the winner. Many historians believe Blaise Pascal (a French physicist, inventor, and mathematician) introduced a primitive form of roulette in the 17th century in his search for a perpetual motion machine. If we look carefully at the mechanical setup of the roulette wheel, The roulette mechanism is a hybrid of a gaming wheel invented in 1720 and the Italian game Biribi. The game has been played in its present form since as early as 1796 in Paris. At first, it was just a game played in monasteries as a way of entertainment but soon after it moved to all French casinos. The game was thought to be an entertainment for glamorous and intelligent visitors.

in 1843, Francois and Luis Blanc opened the first casinos in Hamburg, German, which had the single-zero roulette game (the roulette with only one “0” slot). There is a legend that Francois and Luis Blanc traded their souls in exchange for the secret of roulette. This legend is often followed by the fact that if you add all the numbers on the roulette wheel together you get the number 666 which is The Number of the Beast. The Blancs moved to Monte Carlo due to the ban of gamble in Germany in the 1860s and turned it into the real European gambling center.

In the late 1800’s, the Europeans brought the game to America where it became incredibly popular among those who loved to play with luck and believed in fortune. Roulette was very popular in the days of the Gold Rush. But most casinos in the United States started offering double-zero version of the French roulette game as it was more beneficial for casino owners. Since then the single-zero French roulette game widespread in European countries has been traditionally called “European roulette” and double-zero game played in American casinos – “American roulette”.

Europeans and Americans Roulette layout and how to play the game

It is now a well-known fact that the most common 2 types of roulette played internationally is the American Roulette (that have an extra double 0 slot) and the European (comes with only a single 0 slot). At powerplay365.com, we highly recommend European roulette as it has lower edge for the dealer comparing to American roulette

In the game, players may choose to place single bet and/or multiple bets on either: –

  1. a single number,
  2. various groupings of numbers
  3. the colors red or black,
  4. whether the number is odd or even,
  5. or if the numbers are of the high range (19–36) or low range (1–18)

To determine the winning number and color, a Croupier (Dealer) spins a wheel in one direction, then spins a ball in the opposite direction around a tilted circular track running around the outer edge of the wheel. The ball eventually falls onto the wheel and into one of 37 (single zero French/European style roulette) or 38 (double zero American style roulette) colored and numbered pockets on the wheel.

Roulette is a simple yet fascinating game of chance that is extremely popular around the world. The rules of roulette are quite straightforward. In this game, there is a wheel that features red and black slots that have the numbers from 1 to 36 on them, and one or two green zero. The Croupier or Dealer will spin the wheel and throws in a small ball. Whichever is the number of the slot the ball lands in is the winning number.

The players will place their bet on the table that features the numbers and several additional sectors. After all the participants in the game have placed their bets on the table, the dealer spins the wheel and throws in a small ball. Whichever is the number of the slot the ball lands in is the winning number. Most of the time, we need luck to have winning streak on roulette table, but this can be improved by apply betting strategy which will be discussed in the later part of the article.

Types of Bets

In roulette, there are many betting combinations all of which bring different odds for winning and different payouts. All in all, the more numbers bet on, the bigger the chances for a win and, therefore, the lower are the payouts that the game offers. Other than that, all bets are divided in three main categories: inside, outside and announced bets. The first two categories are the basic ones that are offered by all roulette whereas the third is more advanced and featured only in select roulette variants

  1. Inside Bets

In the roulette table layout, you’ll notice that the main part consists of the numbers from zero to 36 and the rest are sectors for betting on groups of numbers: odd/even, red/black, 1-18/19-36, columns and dozens. The bets on the numbers themselves are called inside bets, whereas the bets on the other sectors are called outside bets. There are seven types of inside bets, as described and illustrated below:

  1. Outside Bets

As we already mentioned, the outside bets in roulette are those bets that are placed outside the number field, on the sectors that cover the bigger groups of numbers. There are five common types outside bets:

Red or Black – Bet on the colour of the winning number
Odd or Even – Bet on whether the winning number will be odd or even
1 to 18 or 19 to 36 – Bet on whether the winning number will be low (lower than 19) or high
Dozens – Bet on one of the three dozen that are found on the layout of the table
Columns – Bet from which of the three columns will the winning number be

  1. Announced Bets

The announced bets are special betting combinations most commonly featured in French Roulette though also often present in online European Roulette variants. And since they are most commonly featured on French Roulette, they all have their individual French names: –

The Voisins du Zéro bet, also known as the Neighbours of Zero. This bet covers the zero and the 7 numbers on each side of the zero – from 22 to 25 on the wheel.

Le Tiers Du Cylindre, another bet, which just like the Voisins du Zéro is covering quite a bit of numbers, is located opposite on the wheel compared to the Voisins du Zéro and covers 12 numbers – from 27 to 33 on the wheel. This is where the name of the bet comes from – it literally translates to ‘One Third of the Wheel’. All the numbers covered by this bet are: 27, 13, 36, 11, 30, 8, 23,10, 5, 24, 16 and 33

Another popular announced bet is called Orphelins. This is pretty much the bet that covers what is not covered by the Voisins du Zéro and the Tier bets combined. This bet covers 8 numbers: 1, 6, 9, 14, 17, 20, 31 and 34.

Furthermore, there’s also the Jeu Zéro bet, also called the Zero Game. This bet covers 3 neighbours of the zero slot on each side of the wheel. It’s a 4-piece bet – there’s one straight on the number 26 and 3 splits on 0/3, 12/15 and 32/35.

Famous strategy – martingale / progression strategy

Now that you know about all the possible bets in roulette, it’s time to try the game for yourself. But how do you choose which bet to make? Well, it all depends on the roulette strategy that you want to adopt

Martingale or Fibonacci System

Martingale or the Fibonacci System is one of the most popular betting strategies in playing Roulette. The best method of using the Martingale System is to place the bet on the Outside Bets, meaning aiming to play either Red vs Black, Odd vs Even, or the Lower Zone (1-18) vs Higher Zone (19-36).

This type of betting has the lowest payout of 1:1 but the highest winning rate of 48.6%! Overall, this is the safest type of bets you can place in the Roulette game.

You are suggested to place the bet according to the following progression as below: –

1- 2- 4- 8-16- 32- 64- 128- 256- 512- 1024

In simple wordings, you double the bet the next round whenever you lose your round. You start with a small amount, preferably the table minimum, and keep betting the same until you lose. When this occurs, double the size of your bet for the next spin. This way, in case you win, you will recover the money you lost on the previous round and win something extra. If you keep on losing, keep on doubling your bet – the logic stays the same. As soon as you win, you should restart and bet the smallest amount for the next spin. Rinse and repeat.

Mathematically, the changes of it does not land on the same zone over and over is minimal: –
European: (19/37)10 = 0.1275%

Meaning the probability to lost 10 round straights is as low as only 0.1275%!!!

Currently, the Roulette game had spread like wild fire into the whole world and it is one of the most popular and well-known game in all international Casinos and more and more players prefer to play roulette games on the Internet.
